Having long been interested in science and the outdoors, Adamina Bilbrey recently leveraged her participation in the Birla Carbon Scholars program to study the conservation of an endangered plant native to Georgia. The 麻豆代天府 environmental science major spent most of her summer studying a beneficial native plant called the royal catchfly in a field in Dade County, Georgia, and discovered the plant flourishes best in areas that experience both sun and shade.

The fact Georgia has the eighth highest number of multilingual students in the country has led three 麻豆代天府 researchers to work toward increasing the number of teachers who speak two or more languages. Kennesaw State鈥檚 Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program in the Bagwell College of Education was awarded more than $2.5 million over the next five years by the U.S. Department of Education to assist in the recruitment and retention efforts of bilingual and multilingual teachers in Georgia.

The old adage that looks can be deceiving could certainly apply to Maria Benitez Blanco. On the exterior, she has long, styled hair and big, dark eyes that light up when she smiles. Her painted fingernails are long and adorned with little jewels on each nail. But on the interior, Blanco is courageous, passionate and full of grit. 鈥淚 had a rough childhood,鈥 said Blanco, who now studies construction management at 麻豆代天府.

Reflecting on her childhood, Lucile Duncan can see that much of her interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) was nurtured by her engineer father. Her early exposure to the field came from frequent interactions with his colleagues and visits to their workplaces. She spent weekends with these professionals and joined them for lunch during summer breaks, which introduced her to engineering at a young age. It was those interactions that ultimately led her to pursue mechanical engineering at 麻豆代天府鈥檚 Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology.
